AUTUMNAL

SOURCEWEBZINE - AUTUMNAL have a sound that's not exactly easy to pin down. Do you take some pride in carving out a unique and fresh sound when there are so many bands content to just accept mediocrity and blend in with
everyone else in the Metal scene?

MIGUEL A. GUTIÉRREZ (BASS) - Yes, we are proud of our sound and it’s very pleasant to meet people who really appreciate our effort. However, different styles influence the way we sound and we compose and we are aware that we still have a lot to improve.

SOURCEWEBZINE - Was there a song or album that inspired you to want to perform music?
MAG - We think the decision of composing and performing music was not taken because of a song or album but of the love we feel for music as a whole and the need to express ourselves. Needless to say that every time we listen to a great album and enjoy it, this sensation becomes an extra motivation for us.

SOURCEWEBZINE - Talk about the recording/mixing of the album...
MAG - The album was recorded in late 2005 and went on for a couple of months. Drums were recorded in one studio and everything else in a different one.
The recording process was smooth as we had previously prepared a demo with the songs, so there wasn’t anything done at random.

SOURCEWEBZINE - How have people responded to "Grey Universe"?
MAG - The response has been amazing! There were a lot of people waiting for our debut with a proper production, after two demos with a less professional sound.
Improvement is obvious and people appreciate and respect our evolution as a band.

SOURCEWEBZINE - Has the response and sales met your expectations?
MAG - We think it’s a bit soon to evaluate the response from the media and sales but they are on the right track. We’ve always tried to keep our expectations below reality and we think it’s a wise way to carry on!

SOURCEWEBZINE - How did you decide on the title "Grey Universe"?

MAG - “Grey universe” is an ambiguous title that refers to both, the immense universe around us and the inner one inside each one of us. We see a close relationship between these “universes”, so any change in one of them affects the other one in one way or another. Grey colour expresses mediocrity, solitude, sadness for us...that’s how we see those “universes”.

SOURCEWEBZINE - What are your favourite cities/venues to play live?
MAG - We don’t have any preferences in particular. We only need professional people on the technical side and a respectful audience to enjoy a show.
We love to play in our home town, Madrid, because we have played here many times and the people’s response is amazing. But we also enjoy playing in cities/venues where we haven’t played before and meet new fans.

SOURCEWEBZINE - What band did you have the best time touring with?
MAG - We haven’t toured so much with other bands up till now, but we specially remember a gig supporting ANATHEMA in Bergara in 2005. The audience was awesome and the way ANATHEMA guys treated us was also fantastic!

SOURCEWEBZINE - With the band's blend of harder and more melodic sounds, have you found you are appealing to fans of both metal and rock?
MAG - We don’t know…..it’s possible. We think a lot of fans from other styles could find interesting ideas and different sensations in our music, but this is not a premeditated act. It’s just our way to express a wide range of feelings and emotions.

SOURCEWEBZINE - What is the music scene like in Spain ?
MAG - There are some excellent bands covering all extreme music styles, some of them renowned in the international underground scene. There are also several people from radios, webzines and labels supporting these bands. However, it’s quite hard to find venues where we can play as well as a high number of people who attend the gigs.

SOURCEWEBZINE - To finish things off then, do you have any last words for SOURCEWEBZINE readers?
MAG - Thank you very much for your interest in the band, and also thanks to all those who want to listen to us. If you want you can visit us at www.autumnal.net or www.myspace.com/autumnaldoom. You might even be pleasantly surprised. Just give us a try!
