BENEDICTUM
// Falber Teles
SOURCEWEBZINE - Congratulations on your successful album "Uncreation" - It sounds amazing. Could you talk a little about the style of music you play?
VERONICA FREEMAN (V) - Well first of all thank you for your interest and the chance to do this interview! I would say it is a collection of all of our influences that come together to make the sound that we have. It is definitely a bit old school with a modern edge thrown in.
SOURCEWEBZINE - We are an online magazine, totally dedicated to the rock, metal and hardcore scene based in Brazil - South America. What else do you know about our beautiful country, besides the fact that we have beautiful Forest ?
VF - I know one thing…you love your metal out there and WE want to play for you sooooo badly. I believe our manager is even working on some type of tour for us next year when the new album comes out! That would be awesome!
SOURCEWEBZINE - What is happening with BENEDICTUM right now? How is the response to the album?
VF - The response to the album has been above and beyond our expectations, so now we are all about writing the new album and hope fans will love it as well.
SOURCEWEBZINE - "Uncreation" was almost a perfect hard rock/heavy metal album that gained only positive words within the media. Was it difficult to make follow-up to such praised album? When will the next album come out ?
VF - Aaah, that always does put one is a predicament ha ha! You know we are planning on having the album finished in the next few months, due to be released I believe in January or ’08. We just do what we do, wrote a few songs that were a bit “different” and had fun in the process.
SOURCEWEBZINE - A lot of female singers in metal opt for the more operatic, high-pitched sound, but your voice has as much aggression in it as any guy's does. What got you singing in this style?
VF - That is a good question. It just feels right for me. I have a very feminine voice too, which you can hear on some songs but for the most part singing the way I do just feels so good. I love the power of metal and it feels right for me!
SOURCEWEBZINE - How did you hook up with Jeff Pilson as your producer and what was it like working with him?
VF - We were introduced to Jeff Pilson through my friend Craig Goldy. Craig had suggested him to do our first demo and after that we were so thrilled to meet him and work with him it was a “no brainer” to have him produce the album. He is a great guy, very sweet, but let me make no mistake, when it comes to music you better have it together. He is focused and will push you to do your best. We love him for that. We all are better musicians after having worked with him.
SOURCEWEBZINE - How much influence did they have on you as far as putting the two BLACK SABBATH covers on the release?
VF - Here is the story behind the two covers:
We had originally planned on doing "Heaven and Hell", then right when we were done with the album we got word from the label that they would like a bonus track, they had heard an old rendition of us doing “Mob Rules”. Well, we didn’t want to do two SABBATH covers so we had to scramble our money together and do an additional track down in San Diego at Kings Ransom Studios with another good friend of mine Jeff Sers as the producer. We went in planning on doing "Rainbow in the Dark" and were so thrilled that Jimmy Bain could join us. We did the song and then had time left over so we did "Mob Rules" too just as a backup. When Jeff Pilson heard the rendition of "Rainbow in the Dark" he just said “NO” and that was that so “Mob Rules” it was! We also were told it was only going to be on a limited addition run of the album but to our surprise they ended up putting it on the official version too.
SOURCEWEBZINE - Do you have any hobbies or interests, other than playing in a heavy metal band?
VF - Oh yes many, I just took a class to get certified for scuba diving and I am on my way to a small island in the Grenadines to get my open water certification, wish me luck! I also love karting, and have been to the track here in Phoenix and Tucson a couple of times. I LOVE it and hope to get time to do it more often. I would say my greatest love though is horses. It is my dream to have many of them and live somewhere where I can ride all the time!
SOURCEWEBZINE - How was your last trip to Europe ?
VF - Incredible! The last time we were there was in December or ’06 for the tour with Doro. What an opportunity that was. I could have done without the toilet clogging up on the bus but I guess you don’t need to hear about that now do you ha ha!! I was the only girl out of twelve guys on the tour bus, we toured with WINTERBORNE and I must say it was an adventure to say the least, but they were all really really cool and I had a great time.
SOURCEWEBZINE - Finally, what is the one thing about BENEDICTUM that nobody knows yet?
VF - Now if I told you... they would know wouldn’t they?
