BRUTAL TRUTH

By Falber Teles • Apr 7th, 2008 • Category: Featured Band, Interviews

SOURCEWEBZINE - Hello Dan. Firstly, I have to say, its great to have Brutal Truth back and an honour that you agreed to do this interview, but I have to start off with the question you’ve probably been asked the most but why you decided to reform and is it good to be back?
Danny Lilker (B/V) - We originally reformed to participate in a benefit album for the EYE HATE GOD guys after Katrina, then we decided it would be cool to try doing some stuff again besides that. Yes, it’s good to be back, even though our original guitarist Gurn wasn’t able to do it. We now have Erik Burke on guitar.

SOURCEWEBZINE - Musically, what’s the difference between Brutal Truth and Crucifist ?
Danny Lilker (B/V) - Crucifist is not really intended to be ultra-modern and cutting edge, it is an amalgamation of our favorite types of 80s metal, like death, black and doom. What makes Crucifist unique is how we combine all these styles in our songs. Brutal Truth is approached differently, it’s supposed to be stuff no one else but us could write or play.

SOURCEWEBZINE - Really. Do you think you might not do another Nuclear Assault or Brutal Truth albums ?
Danny Lilker (B/V) - Nuclear Assault no, Brutal Truth yes. I’m not feeling another Nuke record, I don’t think our comeback record was really good and I’d prefer to just leave it alone. But Brutal Truth is writing a new record…

SOURCEWEBZINE - How have you guys been able to keep Nuclear Assault together lately ? What’s been the motivation?
Danny Lilker (B/V) - Actually Nuke activity is stopping again, John got the job he went to school for, which is being a high school history teacher, which makes it very difficult to do much more. While we were back, the motivation was to play thrash metal which made a lot of people very happy, I guess. I apologize that we can’t do much more besides playing the Maryland Deathfest in May in Baltimore.

SOURCEWEBZINE - What about the response to your reformation from both the fans point of view and the media ?
Danny Lilker (B/V) - The fans seemed really glad to have us back! The current thrash revival with bands like Municipal Waste have made us feel very welcome, which is great. The media were a little more cynical, asking if we were reforming to cash in on the thrash revival, but zines like yours have been very supportive. Obrigado!

SOURCEWEBZINE - Being part of the old school yourself, what is your take on all the bands from back in the day re-emerging? Do you think it signals a lack of credible new music?
Danny Lilker (B/V) - No, I think it’s just that there are a lot of old-school metal fans out there, and when they see people like me at a show, they say “Hey man, did you ever think about playing again?” When enough people ask you this, you start to consider it for real. I guess that happened to a lot of older guys besides me!

SOURCEWEBZINE - Could you tell us more info about Crucifist’s 5-song rehearsal demo CD ?
Danny Lilker (B/V) - It is now 3 and a half years old, we recorded it soon after we formed. We have rerecorded the songs for our full length which should be coming out on Shane Embury’s F.E.T.O. label. The 5 songs on”, the demo are: “Putrid Motherlode”, “Skull Smashing Face Ripping Death”, “Attack of The Plasma Hounds”, “Demon Haunted World” and “Witchgrip”.

SOURCEWEBZINE - How did people react to Brutal Truth during the last tour ?
Danny Lilker (B/V) - Very fucking intensely! Our music seems to make people flip out I think. Grind orgasm. Brutal.

SOURCEWEBZINE - In an effort to deter individuals from downloading albums rather than purchasing them, record labels are doing more to attract listeners. Besides ornate artwork, CDs, and actual DVDs, what else can be done to entice people to buy albums? Is there a way to take it “too far”?
Danny Lilker (B/V) - I don’t see a point in trying to entice people to buy albums, because there are some people who will always buy the albums to support the bands, and some people who will download a band’s stuff no matter what the original package had to offer. These days a lot of people just fill up their iPods and they don’t care about fancy artwork.

SOURCEWEBZINE - What occupies your guys’ time outside of music? Any jobs or other interests?
Danny Lilker (B/V) - Unfortunately I have to have a regular day job but they let me go away whenever I need to. I’m a stock guy at a party supply store! Other members of both Nuke and Brutal are either adjusting to fatherhood, working fulltime like John or just chilling out like me with a job that lets you tour when you need to.

SOURCEWEBZINE - What do you think about the Brazilian metal scene? Do you know much about our bands?
Danny Lilker (B/V) - Besides the obvious Sepultura I am familiar with bands like Sarcofago, R.D.P., Korzus, Mystifier, Sextrash and a few more I’ll remember later when it’s too late of course.

SOURCEWEBZINE - Lastly, thanks again Dan for agreeing to do this interview and please use this space for any final words.
Danny Lilker (B/V) - Thanx to all the metal freaks out there that have allowed me to continue doing what I’ve wanted to do for over 20 years now! It wouldn’t be possible without you! Hailz!
