Illdisposed

SOURCEWEBZINE - Hey Jakob a pleasure to have you again on Source ! How are you doing man?
Jakob Batten (G) - Hey Falber. Our new album was released yesterday over here so I’m busy with release parties and interviews. Pretty stressful, but I’m fine.

SOURCEWEBZINE - In the last months there were a handful changes with Illdisposed. You have chosen AFM Records as your new record label. Please tell us your reasons for signing with them…
Jakob Batten (G) - They promised us a priority release, at Roadrunner we were just a small band. And they gave us a lot of money so it was difficult to say no hehe.

SOURCEWEBZINE - What can people expect from “The Prestigie” compared to “1-800 Vindication” and “Burn Me Wicked” ?
Jakob Batten (G) - We didn’t use electronics or clean vocals so the album is more back to how we sounded in the mid-nineties. More death metal I would say.

SOURCEWEBZINE - What do you feel is you best release not counting “The Prestige”?
Jakob Batten (G) - I think it’s “There’s something rotten in the state of Denmark” from 1997. That’s the sound I like.

SOURCEWEBZINE - Has it changed anything style wise and internally in the band that Franz Hellboss has joined?
Jakob Batten (G) - No, because he joined when we already recorded the album. I don’t know yet if he will affect our sound in the future, we will see what happens.

SOURCEWEBZINE - The band started in 90s what do you contribute the longevity of the band to?
Jakob Batten (G) - It helps us that we don’t really care about anything. Success or not, we don’t care. We just relax and try to have fun. If you worry too much about everything you get sick of it in the long run.

SOURCEWEBZINE - How do you evolved since Infernal Torment even the actual moment with Illdisposed?
Jakob Batten (G) - I’ve become way more relaxed as a musician but that’s natural when you get older I think. Also my song writing skills evolved. You get more and more structured all the time.

SOURCEWEBZINE - How do you feel being one of the pioneers of death metal in Denmark ?
Jakob Batten (G) - It’s not something I think about. We don’t even talk to other bands here or anything. We just run our own show and mind our own business.

SOURCEWEBZINE - Does it ever become hard to balance a “regular” life along with you life on the road with the band? In what ways is each one affected?
Jakob Batten (G) - It is very difficult and takes a lot of planning. Our “normal” life always have first priority. It’s our choice to have it that way. Our normal jobs pay our bills, music pays our drinks and fun.

SOURCEWEBZINE - How did you get your first break into the music business? What piece of advice would you pass onto budding musicians?
Jakob Batten (G) - Everything was easier 18 years ago when I got my first record deal. There wasn’t that many bands so it was easier to get a deal I think. Today it’s very important to play a million shows so you get your name known everywhere. The labels are very interested in that. And then you have to burn for what you do. You have to be willing to work very hard without getting paid for it.

SOURCEWEBZINE - What are your van/tour bus essentials? Any tour horror stories?
Jakob Batten (G) - It’s always a party on wheels so of course a lot of funny things happen. Latest funny thing we do is to slap each other very hard in the face… just for fun. The funniest thing about it is that other people always get shocked. But we have to stop it soon, I almost broke the jaw of a guy hehe.

SOURCEWEBZINE - Who are some current artists you admire?
Jakob Batten (G) - The guys from Dream Theater are awesome. All of them. They can give me goose skin.

SOURCEWEBZINE - Tell us about your tattoos.
Jakob Batten (G) - It’s a mix of skulls and biomechanical stuff. A little bit Giger inspired. And my left arm has red muscle structure behind the biomechanics, my right arm has green muscle structure. My back is just full of crazy stuff, I have a penis there shooting bullets, a V8 engine, naked chicks and stuff like that.

SOURCEWEBZINE - Final thoughts or comments?
Jakob Batten (G) - I hope we will get the chance to come to Brazil one day but it’s very difficult for a band like us to get it managed. Let’s hope for the best. Until then, check out our new album!
