ANGEL BLAKE

SOURCEWEBZINE – A pleasure to have you in our webzine, how are you?
Marko Tervonen (Guitar) – I’m doing fine. Looking forward to the summer and some vacation time. It’s been quite hectic recently on all levels.
SOURCEWEBZINE – The new music sounds really good. Can you give us an update on the whole situation with the recording of the new album?
Marko Tervonen (Guitar) – It happened in the same way as the debut album. I recorded all the instruments by my self in the studio, and then Tobias came in and we spent a few days tracking the vocals. I got some cool new equipment to the studio and I belive that the final mix became really powerful.
SOURCEWEBZINE – Do you think Angel Blake could become or at least reach the level of ‘following’ that The Crown achieved in its entire career?
Marko Tervonen (Guitar) – Dunno. I will keep on releasing Angel Blake albums for as long as I live, so hopefully around 2022 the world has caught up.
SOURCEWEBZINE – So far people seem to really like your album, how does the ‘approval’ or liking of the public affects the development of a future album from Angel Blake?
Marko Tervonen (Guitar) – Of course it’s great to hear from people that they like my music. But I’m not after beeing ”approved” by the critics. For me the whole Angel Blake world is a very personal sphere. At the end of the day it’s only me and my guitar that creates the music. A lot of people were surprised when they heard the debut, ‘cause a lot of people were expecting it to sound like The Crown. But now with 2 albums out, people tend to be able to focus on the music it self, instead of ”assume” things… I could have made it ”easy” for my self to be approved by people by playing Death Metal, but I really felt that Angel Blake should be a different thing.
I still love Death Metal (and play actually Death Metal again, but more about that later…).
SOURCEWEBZINE – The record is the first one you will be releasing through Dynamic Arts Records. How has the cooperation with you and the label been so far?
Marko Tervonen (Guitar) – It’s still very early to say a final statement, let’s see how things roll.
SOURCEWEBZINE – Speaking of label, how do you feel about your jump from Metal Blade Records to Dynamic Arts Records?
Marko Tervonen (Guitar) – It’s interesting to see how different labels work, ‘cause they really work differently. For a death metal band beeing on Metal Blade is a great thing. But DAR has a lot of more wider sounding bands, like Moriam for an example. And they seem to do a good job for bands in that area.
SOURCEWEBZINE – A little bit about internet. What’s your opinion about the big web communities such as Facebook, MySpace etc.? Do you consider them as a good or a bad thing?
Marko Tervonen (Guitar) – It’s really a good thing. MySpace has really hooked me on a lot of new music, and I’ve met a lot of cool people through MySpace (actually Claudio who did the graphics to the album is an online pal I met though MS). It’s also great to check out all these bands you read about, but never heard the music.
In my oppinion FaceBook is a mess. But then again we all have a choice to be there or not.
SOURCEWEBZINE – How do you see as the future of music and recording industry? Do you think that the record sales will continue dropping?
Marko Tervonen (Guitar) – Yeah, definitely. It’s really scary to listen to ”kids” nowadays when they believe that ”all music should be free”, they’re totally out of their minds. I talked with this guy who is 22 years old, and he has never bought an album in his whole life, but he had about 20gigs of music in his iPod.
Every album is available for free on the www, so it’s not hard to understand that when the kids have a choice to either go to the shop and buy the album, or download it in 15minutes for free.
It’s a sad development of the music scence. All the smaller bands will have absolutely no support from a label since they don’t sell albums. That means less budgets, less toursupport. So in the end it’s the fans of the bands that will be punished, it bites them in the ass since they can never then see their favourite bands play live in their country.
SOURCEWEBZINE – There have been so many great Swedish metal bands. Who do you think are the best?
Marko Tervonen (Guitar) – Oh, a tough one. There was a time when I considered Edge Of Sanity to be the best band in sweden, I totally worshipped them. But this was a few years ago abviously since they split up.
Today I listen a lot to swedish bands like Katatonia, Haunted, Kent to name a few.
But mostly I like ”foreign” bands. Morbid Angel + Metallica + Paradise Lost are still my favourite bands.
SOURCEWEBZINE - What would you say is the biggest lesson a band learns on the road? What other bands did you guys played along side with?
Marko Tervonen (Guitar) – Angel Blake has only done a handful of shows yet, more to come. I guess you’ll learn patience pretty fast when you tour, and to respect people.
SOURCEWEBZINE – How are you feeling days ? Are you up for touring, or do you have to wait for a while ?
Marko Tervonen (Guitar) – If a good offer comes up I’m up for it.
SOURCEWEBZINE – Thank you for taking time off and doing this chat with us. Anything you want to say to your Brazilian fans before we wrap things up?
Marko Tervonen (Guitar) – Thank you very much for your support. Angel Blake is a band that will be around forever, so you might as well start checking out some tunes.
