ONE-WAY MIRROR

SOURCEWEBZINE - “One-Way Mirror” marks your debut on the Metal Blade Records. Tell us about the how the album came together?
David Potvin (G) - Guillaume, the singer called my brother Franck with the idea of creating a new band. He used to sing in Scarve and we news these buddies for a long time. We used to share the stage with Lyzanxia and Scarve many times. This new band was going to be a lot of fun, Champagne, titties and everything!
We started to work on a song in 2006. The other songs were composed a bit later. We finally found some time in our complicated schedules to record the drums at the dug out studio, Sweden. The rest of the album was recorded in our own studios (Dome Studio and Dogs in The house, France). We flew to Denmark to mix it with Tue Madsen at the Antfarm studio. The next step was to find a good label. We had the chance that Andreas Raisenauer at the Metal Blade German office liked the album and propose it to the US office. They were OK to work with us.
SOURCEWEBZINE - What’s the actual goal you want to achieve through the “One-Way Mirror” release?
David Potvin (G) - We want to be bigger than Metallica! Hahaha! One-Way Mirror is a real band, so we’re planning to have a long and cool carrier.
We created this band to have fun. You know, we consider Music as an entertainment. We love to play together and to compose songs. I hope the fans will enjoy the album and that we’ll be able to tour a lot in Europe, the US and South America.
SOURCEWEBZINE - What were the thoughts behind/motives for choosing the FGTH song, “Relax”, to be covered on debut album ?
David Potvin (G) - That was my brother’s idea. We were looking for a cover song, but we had no ideas. One day I was in pub with Guillaume when my brother reached us asking: FGTH “Relax” ? He just heard it on the radio 2 minutes before. This song is great, we all like the rhythm and the melody. FGTH is a band that we’ve grown up with in the 80’s and it’s a hit. That was the perfect song.
SOURCEWEBZINE - Seeing how most of you are from different countries how did you meet and find a common interest. Do you find it difficult to rehearse?
David Potvin (G) - We’re actually most of us French. Dirk is from Belgium and lives in Cleveland (USA) now. The rest of the band lives in France. As Loic, our bassist, Franck and I live in the same town (Angers). It’s pretty easy to rehearse with the drums tapes. Anyway we’re used to rehearse 1 or 2 weeks before a tour and that’s it.
SOURCEWEBZINE - You guys get great press, great reviews… deservedly so. How does it feel to get your art fully appreciated by the fans and the media. A lot of other bands may write really great albums but do not always get recognized…
David Potvin (G) - Thanks, I really like the album and I’m really happy to see that a lot of fans send us comments and messages on our www.myspace.com/onewaymirrorband . That’s the most important to us. Medias reviews are always interesting to read, but I rather like to hear what real fans have to say. Sometimes it’s pretty useful. I know that One-Way Mirror is having a good success in France, Spain, Italy, and Switzerland on the media level. Hope I will be the same in Brazil!
SOURCEWEBZINE - A little bit about internet. What’s your opinion about the big web communities such as Facebook, MySpace etc.? Do you consider them as a good or a bad thing?
David Potvin (G) - I think that Myspace is a cool tool for bands, cause it’s free, interactive and it’s the synthesis of the band in 1 page with some sound (even if the sound of myspace is crap!). I’m not that much into Facebook since you need to have a profile to visit other profiles. Too much complicated and boring for me!
SOURCEWEBZINE - Please elaborate on your musical backgrounds in order to shed some light on your current activities.
David Potvin (G) - I play in 2 other bands with my brother. Lyzanxia and Phaze I. Lyzanxia is our first band, it does exist since 1998. Phaze I is more a studio project with my brother and Dirk. Guillaume used to play with the band Scarve since 1998, now he’s also performing for the Danish band Mnemic. Loic is also a musician of Scarve since 2001. He also used to play in another French band called Watcha. Dirk is also, a musician from Scarve, hahaha. He’s now playing in the Swedish band Soilwork ! Actually One-Way Mirror can have been called Scaranxia!
SOURCEWEBZINE - Was there something specific that was going on in your shed life at the time?
David Potvin (G) - The fact the Lyzanxia and Scarve used to share to stage has created strong links between the 2 bands. Guillaume has sung on the Lyzanxia debut album as a guest singer and Dirk has layed the drums on the second album. We actually used to play together before creating One-Way Mirror, I guess that’s why it was easy to compose and work on the band. We all have the same vision of the music.
SOURCEWEBZINE - What will Metal Blade Records be able to do for you in the South America ?
David Potvin (G) - Hopefully to sell millions of copies of One-Way Mirror! I hope that the promo will be cool and that we’ll have the chance to tour overthere!
SOURCEWEBZINE - Here there’s much fans listening your kind of music. What do you know about the Brazil ?
David Potvin (G) - I know a really cool band called Eminence. When we were at the Antfarm Studio with Tue Madsen, we listened to the Eminence album cause Tue worked on the mix. I really like it! I would love to visit Brazil, I know that there is a lot of Metal fans over there.
SOURCEWEBZINE - Have you read any reviews of the album, what does the media think of it ?
David Potvin (G) - It depends on the magazines. Some of them love it, some of them don’t like it. But as I told you, I don’t really care about the reviews. The most important to us is the fans reactions.
SOURCEWEBZINE - It has become time to thank you for doing this interview with us. I wish you good luck with your new record. Is there any last words/thoughts you would like to share with our readers before we wrap this interview up ?
David Potvin (G) - Thanks for your support. I really hope that we’ll be on tour in Brazil on day.
My advice : Drink beers, play music and have fun ! Hope to see you soon guys !
