SOURCEWEBZINE - The new album, “Babies Of Revolution”, is awesome. It has greater depth and is more complex than the previous ones. How long did it take you to record?
Piritta Lumous (Vocals) - Thank you! We recorded in in about four months, but we had some breaks and more writing time in there too, so not total work all the time. Our bassist Klasu was doing some arranging on this one, and he likes progressive, so he put some more complex stuff in there. We wanted to get new angles on pop metal and hopefully found some!
SOURCEWEBZINE - How has the band’s sound evolved from “Nothing As Whole As A Broken Heart” to “Babies Of Revolution”?
Piritta Lumous (Vocals) - The Debut was more poppy and gothic; pink, blue and ice, when this new one is more from the earth; rock’n’ roll, blood, red and sand. The new one is a bit more hard, but lyrically pretty much of the same sadness of a soul than the debut.
SOURCEWEBZINE - What kind of feedback have you received from the record so far?
Piritta Lumous (Vocals) - In Finland, pretty agressive, they seem to be angry because we didn’t re-record the same album again, like many bands do if they get any success. It is almost a rule nowadays to create a sound, and stay “as they like you”. But also many reviewers have liked it because there is developing in there too. People who liked it, loved it, and people who hate it, hate it. So that’s a good sign to us, we don’t want to be average “nice”. It went on chart and people come to see the shows, so the fans know what we mean and that’s what matters to us. We also got reviewes in Germany, half good half bad. Many are confused because they say we make pop-metal-grunge-industrial- gothic rock, what ever, and they’d expect the genre to be something exact. For me, the problem is cosmetic, if the music’s from the heart who cares about tags! It’s just music.
SOURCEWEBZINE - Who is you’re single biggest vocal influence (female)?
Piritta Lumous (Vocals) - Linda Perry (4 Non Blonde ), Janis Joplin, Sandra Nasics (Guano Apes), Skin (Skunk Anansie), Billie Holiday, Dani Klein, Debbie Harry ( Blondie ), Courtney Love.
SOURCEWEBZINE - Are you taking some time off after this over the holidays?
Piritta Lumous (Vocals) - Yes, we have a few weeks off, so it is good. Nowadays I can be without thinking of music on holiday, as long as I don’t listen my cd´s ! Then my heads starts spinning…oh, that´s a nice line there… what did he do… oh, where is my notebook!
SOURCEWEBZINE - What’s currently getting the most spins in your CD or MP3 player?
Piritta Lumous (Vocals) - Neil Young, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Stolen Babies, Entwine,Queens Of The Stone Age…
SOURCEWEBZINE - What is the best part about being a female in the metal scene?
Piritta Lumous (Vocals) - Being surrounded by men of course, heh. I like working with men, they are so straight and I can say what I think and nobody gets insulted easily. Sometimes I also skip carrying the instruments and unlikely nobody yells at me…. the bad part is that sometimes I wish for a girl-talk about clothes and yoga on tour, but hey, can´t get everything. I also get to eat all vegetarian food, since the guys don’t touch it!
SOURCEWEBZINE - How many marriage proposals have you get during the last tour?
Piritta Lumous (Vocals) - ehem… we’ll, I have got some, but not too many. A few. Maybe I’m not a dream girlfriend, I would scream a lot if we had an argument at home and then write it all in a song how badly he behaves, heh.
SOURCEWEBZINE - You girls seem to have a lot of fun during all this tours, is this really a job for you? What’s the coolest thing about hitting the road?
Piritta Lumous (Vocals) - The coolest thing on tour is the lights and the darks, driving fast, and the little excitement to perform, because you can never know how it goes, what breaks down, how is the place, can you contact the people and give them the good feeling you want.
In the bus the other world disappears, there is only the world with the crew and the band and the music, because there is no house, city, cars, cleaning, neigbours, dogs, cooking… Sometimes it takes effort to go between the two worlds, after tour you can be mentally in the moon for a long time. And I don´t mean drinking or anything like that,it is just differend way of being. This is a job I love, but sometimes it is difficult to live with it, insecure mentally and financially. But lovely. We started as a live band with our own songs, and that’s what we still are, even tough we enjoy studio work too nowadays.
SOURCEWEBZINE - Do you want your kids to follow your footsteps into music… Why not ?
Piritta Lumous (Vocals) - At least I could know when they start with the wrong people and tell to run from frauds heh. My boy started with drums now, and he idolizes Heikki (Diablo) and Aksu (Entwine), and they have both played in Manzana, so now I’m a hero, but maybe that will change when he’s older!
SOURCEWEBZINE - The metal scene in Finland is a strong one. Has it been that way for a while, or has it been a recent development?
Piritta Lumous (Vocals) - It has been for a long time, metal suits Finnish mind, it is cold and hard like the winter and darkness. Finns are also quiet, so it is easy to put emotions in music rather that show it. I think that only after Him and NW it finally got out of Finland to be seen. And because of these two bands, people can say now that they play in a band, and it could be considered as a creative work like painting or acting, not only as an excuse to get drunk heh.
SOURCEWEBZINE - Thank you again for your time, and if you would like to add something more, please do.
Piritta Lumous (Vocals) - Thank you! See you soon !
