SOURCEWEBZINE – Give us a preview of your new CD “To The Nines”.
Mixen Lindberg (B) – Once you press “play”, insert the needle or in any other way start the record, it’s going to be like inserting your head into a pair of speakers with sharp teeth. And after treating your wounds you’ll find yourself drawn to do it all over again, only this time you’re able to dig deeper into the layers, showcasing the amount of work we put into this album.
SOURCEWEBZINE – I’d describe the songs as brutal, but technical. Do you think that’s an accurate description?
Jonathan Joller Albrechtsen (V) – That’s pretty accurate, brutal, technical, but really groovy as well. The dynamics on this album is really strong, and I think we ended up with a really good and whole sounding record.
SOURCEWEBZINE – Listening to your earlier material it’s obvious that the band have evolved. Do you think you have found the perfect sound and style by now?
Peter Pepe Lyse Hansen (G) – Obviously we mostly do thrashy stuff, as we have been doing that so many years, so in that sense we have found the perfect style for us. But that doesnt mean, that the music cant evolve. We always try to put in different stuff – to keep the music intense and exciting. As you grow older and more experienced you dare to experient a bit more and still be close to your roots, and I guess that is the difference you can hear from our first album to now.
SOURCEWEBZINE – What do you think of the current crop of death metal acts in Denmark? Which bands would you stand out right now?
Peter Pepe Lyse Hansen (G) – I think Denmark has got a healthy scene – it has grown the last five years for sure – even though the tendency not only in Denmark but all over the world is that there are simply too many bands in my opinion. I dont see an actually death metal boost in Denmark but more a metal boost in general. Right now Denmark has got bands like HateSphere, Raunchy and Mercenary that tours a lot and get international recognition.
SOURCEWEBZINE – How’s the cooperation with Napalm Records ? For how many albums did you sign/how many do you still have to do for them?
Mixen Lindberg (B) – So far it’s been really good, and we’re confident we’re in for a good run with Napalm Records. They came through when we were feeling disillusioned about being on a record label so we’re exited and ready to get to work.
SOURCEWEBZINE – Have you filmed any videos for this new CD?
Jonathan Joller Albrechtsen (V) – Yes we did, we made a video for the title track “To The Nines”. It’s a really wicked video, with some pretty graphic imagery. Lot’s of blood, and I promise that this video will enduce some distorted thoughts. I dont want to reveal to much, because the video is done and ready to be released and you can check it out for yourself soon.
SOURCEWEBZINE – In terms of exposing the band to a wider audience, who would have thought you’d ever hear a Hatesphere song on the radio? But thanks to satellite, it’s happening.
Peter Pepe Lyse Hansen (G) – It’s a cool thing to hear that once in a while – even though it’s rare – HateSphere gets played in the radio. Here in Denmark we get played on the National Radio Maximum two times a year – on the internetradios and local radios around the world it is for sure more – and at rare occasions we have our videos shown in National TV as well. It is a great break through for us to be able to do that, as the National radio and TV in Denmark are quite conservative – so even though it is rare it is still progress.
Thanks to Myspace and Youtube people are able to listen to and watch HateSphere music and videos whenever they want around the world – and it’s amazing to know that you can watch HateSphere stuff all the way down in Brazil because of this.
SOURCEWEBZINE – So far you had some very successful albums and the new will also be a success. But how far your ambition goes, where do you see Hatesphere in the future ?
Jonathan Joller Albrechtsen (V) – Well, as far as our ambition goes… Theres not really a limit, we want the world. Hahaha… No really, we’re aiming to go overseas to tour North and South America. That’s definitly one of our main prioryties!
SOURCEWEBZINE – What are the positive and negative aspects of being a musician in Denmark?
Mixen Lindberg (B) – One of the good things are all the unions we have, and the security they and their professional staff provide when mischief promoters, crummy venues and slick record labels are trying to screw you over. We’re also lucky to have strong copyrights associations working hard for any danish registered musician, domestically, but also internationally. The same organizations are also very supportive with fundings for projects/bands. I’d say that being a small country, and having a strong cultural attaché department is really positive.
The only negative effect this creates, is having to deal with spoiled brats. In my opinion, I think (some) Danish musicians are often morons, having high expectations about being a “musician” when instead, they should play a couple of SHIT tours around Europe, get paid next to nothing, sleep in moist damp basements, eat the same crappy food every night, and play shows for small crowds. That way we’d have a country full of appreciative artists, that instead of competing on all things would be able to combine forces and gain knowledge from each others experiences. With that being said, there’s definitely a strong bondbetween bands, I just wish it was stronger.
SOURCEWEBZINE – In Brazil there’s much fans listening your kind of music. What do you know about the Brazil?
Jonathan Joller Albrechtsen (V) – To be honest I don’t know that much about Brazil. I know the basic geography, a few of the cities Rio etc. I know Sepultura, and Soulfly, bands I really enjoyed listening to.
SOURCEWEBZINE – Tell us a little a bit about your interests outside of making music. Don’t you ever feel like taking a break from it all since you have so much going on at once that is purely music related ? What is it that you like to do not dealing with music?
Mixen Lindberg (B) – When I’m not busy writing, recording or touring with HateSphere I’m busy with one of the many other bands I’m in. I have a punk band, another punk band, a noisy band and possibly a couple of other bands that I forgot about I also do one-off sessions with friends, bands and other musicians, and everything is always evolving around music as it has been for as long as I can remember. But sometimes I DO get fed up and then I hang out with my dog, Nelson, and cook food. That’s probably 2 of my favorite things to do when I’m home, and not doing anything music related; Invite people over and eat delicious food in the presence of good company. Maybe even start jamming… And then it’s full circle.
SOURCEWEBZINE – Thanks for your time and good luck with the album. Anything else to say?
Peter Pepe Lyse Hansen (G) – Thank you as well – it was a pleasure to do the interview! Remember to check out both www.hatesphere.com and www.myspace.com/hatesphere for tracks and videos of the new album – and of course: buy the actual album ? We are very honoured to do this interview with a Brazilian webzine, and we hope to be able to play down there very soon. When this happens, we want to see all of you guys and girls out there going crazy –it will be a blast!
