SOURCE – Congratulations on the new album “De ödeslösa”. You guys have been doing this on and off for more than two decades now. How do you maintain inspiration and not just get bored and sleepwalk through it?
Patrik Lindgren (Guitars) – Thank you! I think one of the main reasons is that we kept Thyrfing away from being a business and how we make our living. Instead it’s simply been an oasis for creativity when there has been time and inspiration from our side. This way there is no chance of making it feel like an “everyday job” and something that you “have” to do. If this would have been different, I’m sure there would be more Thyrfing releases and music out there, but I cannot guarantee it would all have been good and fully inspired.
SOURCE – About the new album, would you characterize it as a classical Thyrfing album?
Patrik Lindgren (Guitars) – Yeah, definitely! I mean, we have had quite some line-up changes for this album, but I still think that it definitely follows the path of Thyrfing and how our sound evolved through the years. It’s been one long natural progression and I’ve always seen the band as a stronger unit than its individual members in that sense.
SOURCE – Can you give me a track-by-track breakdown of the album? What drove the inspiration of each song and what your thoughts on their individual sounds?
Patrik Lindgren (Guitars):
“Mot Helgrind”: The opening track and I think it sets the tone very well for the rest of the album. It was one of the first songs we wrote for this album, and in my opinion it holds every single ingredient that represent the album, and for the band for that matter. So it’s a great opener I think.
“Fordom”: The song was mainly written by Jens, and it’s classic Thyrfing stuff all the way. Fans of the
“Vansinnesvisor” album and the more epic things will surely feel at home here …
“Veners Förfall”: The song was actually written around the rather offbeat middle piano part – which I think is really different from how you usually put your piano in metal music. This was the first song we released for the album and I do know its many people’s favourite track.
“Illvilja”: Probably the darkest and most atmospheric track on the album, even though the chorus is rather pounding and uplifting. The intro is hopefully going to put a grin on people’s faces rather than causing annoyment, but you never know …
“Kamp”: This was written by Joakim, and same here … the intro (and actually the whole song) might part the crowd into two … This seems kind of a “love it or hate it track”. I know many people who hold it as their favourite on the album, but also some think it’s too simple and different from the rest. However, give it a try and make up your own mind!
“Relik”: This is one of the first tracks written for the album. It even features our old bass player Kimmy on this recording. He was still in the band when it was written and rehearsed and as we parted way on good terms, we thought it would be a nice thing to have him playing on this one.
“Vindöga”: This was written by our “new” (well …) guitarist Fredrik and is both epic and catchy as f*** I would say … turned out really good. There’s nothing really spectacular going on, just classy song-writing and well-known Thyrfing style. Pounding!
“De ödeslösa”: The title track and maybe the most epic side of the album. Features some 6/8 blast beats and is maybe not that conventional Thyrfing stuff thinking about it … still it captures the essence and atmosphere of the album and sums it up perfectly. Personally, it’s one of my favourite tracks ever for the band.
SOURCE - Are you preparing a music video for a song from the new album?
Patrik Lindgren (Guitars) - Nothing concrete is planned yet, so I doubt it will happen for this album unfortunately.
SOURCE – Do you pay attention to magazine and internet reviews of your CDs?
Patrik Lindgren (Guitars) - Yeah, if I see something I read it. It’s not like I’m desperately searching for everything, but if it comes across … sure, who wouldn’t? Then if it affects me or not it depends … both positive and negative criticism could be valuable in a way, as long as it bears some kind of truth and understanding of what we are doing and trying to achieve.
SOURCE – Social media like Facebook and Twitter has been a great tool in communicating with fans and getting the word out. But has that translated into anything tangible for the band, like increased sales, higher concert attendance etc.?
Patrik Lindgren (Guitars) - I don’t know … these kinds of things are really hard to measure. But I’m totally convinced that we can reach fans and listeners easier and faster with today’s tools, comparing to let’s say 10 or 15 years ago …
SOURCE – Are any of the members of Thyrfing currently in other bands?
Patrik Lindgren (Guitars) - I play in TWILIGHT OF THE GODS, which is a band that rose from the Bathory live tribute we toured with a few years ago. It features members of Primordial, Ava Inferi, Einherjer, Lock-Up and others … we will release our debut album this autumn, so make sure to check it out. Fredrik plays with THE CURSE which is a Death Metal band from the ashes of the great Kaamos. They are currently preparing their first recordings I think. Then there are some projects which (I assume?) is on hold, such as Joakim and Dennis’ band RUTTHNA and Jens solo project PROFUNDI. Not sure if there will come anything more from there …
SOURCE – You don’t play a huge amount of live shows. Is that a matter of personal preference, or are there other circumstances that don’t allow you to tour extensively?
Patrik Lindgren (Guitars) – As I wrote before, Thyrfing is not our “daily job”, so yeah … we have some problems touring extensively. But we still try to play as much as possible doing gigs here and there. We surely enjoy playing live so it’s nothing that we turn down by anything else but practical and logistical circumstances.
SOURCE – Will we see Thyrfing in Brazil?
Patrik Lindgren (Guitars) – I certainly hope so! We’d love to play there and I know we have a lot of fans in Brazil. Hopefully we will get an opportunity to play there in the future.
SOURCE – Anything else you’d like to add?
Patrik Lindgren (Guitars) – Thank you for shown interest and support – keep listening to Thyrfing and hope to see you from a stage somewhere, sometime …
