Desert Storm

SOURCE – Congratulations on your new record Death Rattle, I feel that this is perhaps your best record ever, how do you feel about this statement?

Ryan Cole (Guitars) – Thank you, yes, we are very happy with this album, and agree it is probably our strongest so far!

SOURCE – Were there any songs on this new album that were a bit more of a challenge in the writing or the recording stages?

Ryan Cole (Guitars) – I think Cheyne Stoking and Insomniac were probably the most challenging. Both the songs are long and progressive and complex in structure, this also meant the recording stage took longer.

SOURCE – How did you end up with the title Death Rattle? Was that the feeling that prevailed when wading through these seemingly endlessly pandemic?

Ryan Cole (Guitars) – The title ‘Death Rattle’ is related to the song title ‘Cheyne Stoking’ both mean the breathing pattern / last breath before die…bleak subject, but its heavy music and there are a lot of bleak subjects lyrically on the album as well as in the title. The Pandemic prevented the touring of the last album ‘Omens’ but led to us writing ‘Death Rattle’ sooner then we initially would have.

SOURCE – What do you consider some of the biggest challenges currently facing Desert Storm at this point in the band’s career?

Ryan Cole (Guitars) – some of the biggest challenges i feel are still getting the band opportunities on high profile tour supports and major open air festivals….you can be the the best band in the world but without someone in the industry booking or managing you, you havent got a chance really. We don’t have a bookers or managers, so its a battle for us.

SOURCE – We did an interview early 2020 when the previous album Omens came out. So let us pick up the thread around that time. When Omens came out, the pandemic hit the world. So I guess you could not support that album with selected live gigs or did you?

Ryan Cole (Guitars) – yeah, the pandemic ruined the whole touring process of that album, we managed to do some shows eventually but we basically just focused on Death Rattle.

SOURCE – Was Cheyne Stoking a difficult video to make for you?

Ryan Cole (Guitars) – No not at all, we just used footage from the movie ‘Dead Mans Shoes’ worked well we felt.

SOURCE – What would surprise people to learn about you guys as musicians in your off-time or spare time away from music, any specific hobbies, interests, or passions you like to pursue? And is it a balancing act to execute band responsibilities with careers, families, and outside relationships?

Ryan Cole (Guitars) – Well outside the band we dont see each other much. Me and Elliot are both Chefs, and Elliot has a wife and a kid. Matt is an fx artist for a game company – Rebellion, and Matt Dennett is a warrant officer for the police, chasing people who miss court dates. It’s all a balancing act but we find a way to make it work.

SOURCE – What’s left on the agenda of bucket list items for Desert Storm – or you personally – to accomplish down the road?

Ryan Cole (Guitars) – For us we will still keep creating music and touring and hopefully some day land some major tours and festivals. Would be great to tour USA and south america too!
