Hatesphere

HateSphere

SOURCE – Several song titles would have made good album titles. What led you to pick Hatred Reborn?

Peter Lyse Hansen (Guitars) – We think that it fits the band and the situation in the band quite well. We have had a very quite time during the pandemic, haven’t been playing much for obvious reasons but also haven’t had a steady vocalist, as Esse left the band just before the pandemic started. We didn’t really feel motivated to find a new guy, as we didn’t have any shows planned but slowly we woke up again, found the motivation to and here we are. So, the hatred is reborn in the band, the band has gotten the new found energy that we needed, that’s why we feel that the title is not only cool because it fits the atmosphere of the music but it also fits the atmosphere in the band.

SOURCE – Hatred Reborn is the eleventh Hatesphere album. Outside of working on a record during an unprecedented pandemic atmosphere, where do you see the specific differences or outlook on this set of material that sets things apart from other albums?

Peter Lyse Hansen (Guitars) – As I wrote above then we have a new found energy which I personally can hear in the songs. We have also experimented with some old school death metal and atmospherical stuff on this album. This plus Mathias’ more old school HateSphere vocals really have given us a more raw and wild output.

SOURCE – What can you tell me about Another Piece Of Meat (Scorpions) Cover?

Peter Lyse Hansen (Guitars) – We usually do a cover song as part of the Japan release or the digipack version, and as we entered the studio we actually really didn’t know which song to choose. I like hard rock stuff, and Tue Madsen, our producer is an old school Scorpions fan, so he came up with the idea to try this song out. We just wanted it to sound more like one of our own songs, so that’s what we aimed for. All in all we like to cover songs that are not up our alley, not typical HateSphere stuff. So usually we don’t do too many Slayer covers etc. Not because we don’t like them – quite the contrary – but because it’s more challenging both for us but also for the listener to hear something different instead of covering another thrash band.

SOURCE – How do you manage after more than 23 years to write music that is fresh and doesn’t repeat itself yet maintains a core sound?

Peter Lyse Hansen (Guitars) – I just write music from my head, and I guess my thoughts and my life changes obviously, so therefore the music changes just a bit as well. I like that you are able to hear that it’s HateSphere. I like to have a basic sound of the band. But I also like to spice the music up with small details that makes it differ from our other stuff and from other stuff around. The older I get the more confident I am in my song writing, and as a band we are super confident in how we write our music. If we like a song, a riff, we work with it. If we hear right away that it’s not good enough, we don’t waste time on it, and simply do another song instead.

SOURCE – Do you enjoy making videos, or are they a necessary evil of the promotion process?

Peter Lyse Hansen (Guitars) – Well, this time around we really enjoyed it, as we did it with an old friend of ours and we had a great time. Videos are not our favorite thing but we know we have to do them. That doesn’t mean that we don’t care how they are gonna look, it just means that we like recording and playing live better, haha. But we want the videos to fit the atmosphere of the band, the atmosphere of the music, and we always want things to look good, when they have a HateSphere stamp on them. So, we do videos and we make them look cool – we just enjoy playing live and making new music way, way better, hehe.

SOURCE – The promotion process is now driven by social media. Do you like the transparency and interaction, or do you prefer when there was a bit more mystique around album releases?

Peter Lyse Hansen (Guitars) – I’m a bit old school here. I remember that mystique that you are talking about when growing up and getting to know this music. You don’t feel quite the same way anymore, as the music is easy to access, it’s easy to access the bands, and you can always find out what bands are doing with just a click. That being said it’s also a cool thing that you can easily find your favorite band, and that your favorite band easily can communicate with you. So even though some of the mystique is gone, something good is happening as well. If we could just minimize the quantity of releases just a bit that would be super. I think way too many bands are releasing all the times, and you tend to drown in all that. Anyway, we’re getting better at communicating with the fans on social media, and I like the fact that you can talk directly to fans.

SOURCE – You have performed with Sepultura in the past (2012), the last time more than 11 years ago. How did the tour come about?

Peter Lyse Hansen (Guitars) – It was through our old booking agency that also had Sepultura in certain territories. The tour was actually in Russia and the Baltics (and Finland), and was one of the first with Eloy on the drums. Hopefully we’ll have the chance to perform with them soon again!

SOURCE – Thank you for your time, hope to see you live in Brazil someday.

Peter Lyse Hansen (Guitars) – Thanks you as well. Hope to play Brazil sometime soon! That would be awesome!

Thanks for your time and for the Brazilian fans – hope to see you soon! Until then check out our new album, the videos and the singles!
