Godthrymm

SOURCE – Reflections is the latest Godthrymm album – where do you see the major differences between this record and the previous, or do you believe it’s just a natural extension of what the band has been trying to do all along?

Hamish Hamilton Glencross (Vocals, Guitars) – The album is an absolute evolution from the previous EPs, where we were very much finding ourselves and rekindling our love for this style of music, plus finding the right dynamic for the band lineup. Now, we are streamlined, more focused and incredibly passionate about what we have created. This is what we were leading to all along, and now I can’t wait to see what we achieve next.

SOURCE – What have you gained in experience from working with different bands over the years?

Hamish Hamilton Glencross (Vocals, Guitars) – A lot of practical experience certainly in regards to the different aspects of gigging, but I feel I’ve learned a lot from songwriting with different people and appreciating different perspectives. We’ve been very fortunate to have worked with some great musicians over the years, and are very proud to have done so.

SOURCE – In terms of Godthrymm’s sound, do you feel that you kind of have a blueprint of what your music should sound like?

Hamish Hamilton Glencross (Vocals, Guitars) – Ultimately, we want to be defined by heavy, emotive riffs, crushing drums and haunting melancholic (dare I say beautiful) guitar leads and melodies. Vocally, I’ve gained so much confidence in a relatively short time, and really feel I’ve found my voice and what works.

SOURCE – What are some of the positives and negatives of songwriting as a 3-man team?

Hamish Hamilton Glencross (Vocals, Guitars) – The positive is maintaining a tightly focused singular vision, so that’s great. Musically, we don’t tread on each other’s toes, and we have the sonic space to really express ourselves to the fullest. I’ve always been in larger lineups over the years, and I’m loving the dynamic freedom of the three piece lineup.

SOURCE – What you can tell us regarding the cover concept – was it a collaborative effort between yourself and the artist to capture the right imagery?

Hamish Hamilton Glencross (Vocals, Guitars) – We’ve been fortunate to work with Brian D’Agosta a couple of times previously, so have quite a good understanding of each other’s work, and am proud to describe him as a friend. We spoke a bit about thematic content, and I sent him lyrics and a couple of songs. He just continues to astonish me with everything he does.

SOURCE – Do you feel that your geographic location has helped to keep you doing your own thing over the years?

Hamish Hamilton Glencross (Vocals, Guitars) – Obviously, most people tend to associate doom metal with a place like UK. Certainly we’ve got an incredible history and tradition of doom metal up in the north of England! The scene has a long list of great bands, and it certainly continues now. It’s wonderful to be a party of that.

SOURCE – How important is it to surround yourself with the right team of people between the label, management, booking agency, etc. to build the brand of Godthrymm?

Hamish Hamilton Glencross (Vocals, Guitars) – Where do you see the roles of the musicians within the band in all of this – as you have to gain a sense of trust that these individuals are going to treat you in the right way? It’s so very essential. It took some time to get the right lineup, and now we’ve got the perfect complimentary lineup. We play so well together and have massive respect for each other as musicians and as friends. I was drawn to Profound Lore Records, as their love for music was obvious and the passion was inspiring. And of course, the art is such an important extension, and so the working relationship we’ve cultivated with Brian is one we look forward to continuing.

SOURCE – What’s next for Godthrymm, besides the album release?

Hamish Hamilton Glencross (Vocals, Guitars) – We’re very much looking forward to seeing and hearing people’s reactions to the album, and we hope to play live as much as we can; we’ve got a fantastic dynamic as a live act, and just love what we do. We hope to share this with as many folk in as many different places as possible. Then we look to return to the studio, I’ve already got so many ideas I want to get on to!
