SOURCE – What do you feel Profound Morality does best for Heriot?

Debbie Gough (Vocals/Guitar) – Profound Morality conveys more about Heriot than we’ve ever been able to before. We’ve experimented with our sound drastically throughout this record and have been able to learn more about the personality of Heriot as a band. There are elements in this release that we never could have foreseen when we started Heriot- we’ve matured a lot as a band.

SOURCE – What do you think as a new band have been the greatest learning curves that you’ve had to work through that maybe other acts or musicians never put much stock or energy into?

Debbie Gough (Vocals/Guitar) – We can’t speak for other bands but our biggest learning curve has been trying to master the art of planning and expecting the unexpected. In these ‘Covid Times’, we’re always having to rethink our schedule and stay ahead. Because of this, we’re much more organised than we’ve been in the past and we think that has really worked to our advantage.

SOURCE – Of all the singles you released leading up to the album release, which do you personally think might have had the biggest impact on your success?

Debbie Gough (Vocals/Guitar) – ‘Dispirit’ has definitely been the track that has caught the most attention so far. It’s a song we love and are very proud of. We’re pleased that Dispirit has done well as it was the beginning of introducing a new side of Heriot.

SOURCE – Tell us about the video shoot for Coalescence – and how important do you believe the visual medium is in the social media platform in comparison to your early days when video channels seemed to have more of an impact for bands to gain attention?

Debbie Gough (Vocals/Guitar) – Heriot is a very visual band and we work very hard to cement our music as an immersive experience. Music is definitely gravitating to be more of an illustrative experience and we love that the art in music is being explored more by bands as of late. We grew up watching Scuzz and Kerrang! and collectively love music videos. Coalescence’s music video was shot by our good friend, Harry Steel, who we work with closely on the visual side of things.

SOURCE – Do you believe social media channels and platforms like Bandcamp, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, etc. have helped give independent bands like yourselves a better chance for gaining an international following?

Debbie Gough (Vocals/Guitar) – Social media allows you to reach a far wider audience than we could achieve offline. Bandcamp especially is a fantastic way for bands like us to reach fans and with their ‘Bandcamp Fridays’, we benefit greatly. We have a fantastic label, Church Road, who support our growth on all of these channels.

SOURCE – What’s planned following the release of Profound Morality?

Debbie Gough (Vocals/Guitar) – We’re also doing a few UK festivals this summer and hopefully hitting the road again later this year. We’re also always writing new music and may or may not have an album in the works! Keep your eyes peeled.

SOURCE – A lot of bands and artists in the industry have been negatively affected by COVID and being unable to tour. For fans of your music, what is the best way we can support you guys?

Debbie Gough (Vocals/Guitar) – The best way to support any band or artist in these times is to pick up some merch or buy a record! We understand that these times have been tough for everyone and buying merch isn’t an option for everyone, really we are just appreciative of you spinning our tunes!
