Bands You Need to Know Now – July 2020

ENTRY

As a collective, the members of ENTRY passionately believe in the power of punk and the uniting nature of music, and with Detriment they reflect themselves and their community with integrity and authenticity. Inspired by the likes of Discharge, Minor Threat, Converge, Tragedy, The Cramps, and The Exploited, ENTRY started as a project between Sara G – whose musical origins come from punk bands in Pennsylvania – and Clayton Stevens, who also plays guitar in Touché Amoré. Bass player Sean Sakamoto plays in the indie pop band Sheer and drummer Chris Dwyer. The punk community at large is as inspiring as it has ever been to them.

SHROUD OF VULTURE

Indianapolis – Indiana based death doom metal band Shroud of Vulture premiere the full-album stream of the band’s brand new album Upon a Throne of Jackals, which was released July 1, 2020. Shroud of Vulture binds doom, death and black metal in supreme profane matrimony to birth savage monuments of sound in order to usurp their rightful seat in the gaping jaw of the throne of jackals.

CONVOCATION

Formed 4 years ago in Helsinki – Finland, Convocation started as a death metal project that later developed more close to darker doomish soundscapes, an outlet for really heavy and slow music with the will to experiment including synths and organs.

The second coming of Convocation brings us the finnish Doom Death band (feat. members of Desolate Shrine and Dark Buddha Rising) at its bleakest and most majestic peak. Ashes Coalesce is an album of contrasts and confusion, beautiful yet horrifying.

REASONS BEHIND

Project: M.I.S.T. is a concept album about life and reality, a story that unfolds through 11 compelling tracks illustrated by the evocative artwork of Gustavo Sazes. Over the course of the career, Reasons Behind definitely evolved from a symphonic metal band with electronic influences into a more synth-oriented sounding outfit.

On their sophomore record the final result is simply outstanding: the crystal-clear, powerful voice of Elisa Bonafè dances between catchy and enthralling melodies (conceived by the band leader, songwriter and guitarist Gabriele Sapori), combined with both modern Swedish Metal and Metalcore riffing and immersed in Trance/Dubstep/Eurodance atmospheres.

‘Project: M.I.S.T.’ is a concept album about life and reality, enriched by lyrics that depict all the facets of human existence: a modern metal sci-fi rollercoaster that will take the listener through a breathtaking journey weaved from a stream of images and tunes.

THIRTY NIGHTS OF VIOLENCE

Nashville-based rabble rousers Thirty Nights of Violence are back with their sophomore EP, You’ll See Me Up There via Unbeaten Records. There is truly something for everyone on their second record, pulling influences from every previous era of the metalcore band’s history. This is the album that many people, the band included, have been waiting on for years!

HUM

The Illinois-based rockers are back after a 22-year span between albums, surprise releasing their latest offering Inlet. Having reunited on a sporadic basis in the years since, the band’s core four of Matt Talbott, Tim Lash, Jeff Dimpsey and Bryan St. Pere eventually decided to start working on new music in recent years.

Hum have clearly refined their sound to strike an ideal balance between their roots and modern rock sensibilities. The resulting collection of songs is both a love letter to ’90s rock traditions and an innovative blend of several adjacent subgenres and how they’ve evolved concurrently over time.
