Runemagick

SOURCE – Just to start off, I wanted to say that you guys seem to have some pretty high consistency from album to album.

Nicklas Rudolfsson (Guitar, Vocals) – Thanks! Although we have recorded some albums too quickly, and sound/production have been negatively affected. I am nevertheless pleased with our material in terms of composing and songs.

SOURCE – Given that the band is now about 30 years old, what are some of your fondest memories with Runemagick to date?

Nicklas Rudolfsson (Guitar, Vocals) – We had a period when we rehearsed a lot around 2001-2003. It was a good time that I can sometimes miss. Then of course it was a highlight when we decided to start up again and record new material at the end of 2017. Then there are certainly lots of nice memories from gigs, recordings and other things over the years.

SOURCE – What do you feel Into Desolate Realms does best for Runemagick?

Nicklas Rudolfsson (Guitar, Vocals) – I think we got a good balance and variation in the material. It sounds like Runemagick but I still thinks it is interesting and a little new.
The album has a good “overall feeling” in terms of sound, songs and artwork. Thats often difficult to get.

SOURCE – Do you feel that there were any lessons that you learned as a band with Into Desolate Realms that you applied to the new album?

Nicklas Rudolfsson (Guitar, Vocals) – I’m used to doing everything fast, often too fast which is stressful. This time we really tried not to stress and that I think helped shape the whole “overall feeling” mentioned earlier.

SOURCE – What are your thoughts on the state of Gothenburg death metal in general? Is there equal appreciation for the newer bands as there is for the old guard, and what would you like to see change about things (if anything at all)?

Nicklas Rudolfsson (Guitar, Vocals) – We are not actually a Gothenburg band (anymore). Me, Emma and Daniel lived there before but it is many years now. Daniel has been living in Stockholm for many years and Emma and I live in the countryside about 60 km above Gothenburg. I cannot claim that I have full insight into what is happening in the Gothenburg scene right now.

SOURCE – Do you believe social media channels and platforms like Bandcamp, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, etc. have helped give independent bands like yourselves a better chance for gaining an international following?

Nicklas Rudolfsson (Guitar, Vocals) – Yes, I think so. In the past, flyers and tape were sent around and it was not as easy to be seen and heard. That is not to say that we have a goal of becoming a big band. We have not and will never have.

But of course it is easier to spread music and news now, but it is for everyone else too so there are extremely many bands and albums that are released all the time. Might be a problem in itself for bands that want to be known, I think.

SOURCE – How do you feel you’ve changed as a group as you’ve gotten older?

Nicklas Rudolfsson (Guitar, Vocals) – We have much less time. There are other things in life that are also prioritized. Although for me it is very important to write music and will probably be so until I move on from this body.

SOURCE – What’s the band up to for the rest of the year?

Nicklas Rudolfsson (Guitar, Vocals) – Right now all the focus is on activities around the release of the album. Then we are working on some reissues. We also released a split vinyl with the US band Chthonic Deity via Parasitic Records.

In 2020, we will make some occasional gigs. Then we will see what happens. We are all more or less involved in other bands and projects as well that needs time so to speak.
